Department of Mechanical Engineering Professor Jelena Srebric recently received a $20,100 grant through the University Sustainability Fund for their work on “Real-time UMD Campus Energy Water Monitoring, Mapping and Management.”

The funding covered costs associated with installing occupancy sensors in select campus buildings to collect data on water and energy use. Afterwards, the team will input the data in a web-based interface to allow building occupants to monitor the impact of their presence on the building’s performance. The project ultimately aims to cut campus costs through the reduction of water and energy consumption, and contribute to the President’s Energy Initiatives goal of reducing energy consumption on campus by 20% by 2020.

The University Sustainability Fund provides funding for projects that promote environmental sustainability, and positively impact and enhance the student experience at UMD. Funds are allocated to projects that increase the use of renewable energy on campus and/or in the local community, increase the energy efficiency of our facilities, reduce the amount of waste created and material resources used on campus, encourage sustainable behaviors, and integrate sustainability into teaching, research, and service at UMD.
