Department of Mechanical Engineering Assistant Professor Katrina Groth has been named to the Editorial Board of Elsevier’s Reliability Engineering & System SafetyReliability Engineering and System Safety is an international journal devoted to the development and application of methods for the enhancement of the safety and reliability of complex technological systems.

Groth is the associate director for research for the University of Maryland’s Center for Risk and Reliability and the director of the Systems Risk and Reliability Analysis lab (SyRRA). Her research focuses on the development of models and computational methods for risk analysis of complex engineering systems. Groth’s research blends reliability engineering, probability theory, causality, Bayesian methods, machine learning, and cognitive science to provide human-focused insights.

Her research has enhanced system safety, U.S. policy, and international regulations for applications including hydrogen fueling stations, oil and gas infrastructure, commercial aviation, and nuclear power.

Prior to joining UMD, she served as Principal R&D Engineer at Sandia National Laboratories, where she led multiple projects in probabilistic risk assessment, human reliability analysis, and hydrogen safety.

Elsevier Editorial Board Members are instrumental in helping to organize a rapid and efficient editorial process, and in maintaining their high standards of publication.
