Dr. Jaydev P. Desai

 

Dr. Jaydev P. Desai has been promoted to full Professor of Mechanical Engineering, effective July 1, 2013.

Desai joined the university in October 2006 and his research is primarily focused on the area of medical robotics. Along with colleagues from the University of Maryland, Baltimore and the University of Maryland School of Medicine, he received a $2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to continue developing a small robot that could aid neurosurgeons in removing brain tumors that are in difficult to reach areas of the brain. He won a seed grant from the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore for his research on “Accurate Robotic in-situ Diagnosis of Ablation Targets for Atrial Fibrillation.” Desai is also the Director of the Robotics, Automation and Medical Systems (RAMS) Laboratory, which focuses primarily on medical robotics research.

“His accomplishments have placed him on a path for continued international leadership in the broad area of robotics,” said Mechanical Engineering Department Chair Balakumar Balachandran in an e-mail to faculty and staff.
