Associate Professor and Associate Director of the QUEST Honors Fellows Program Jeffrey Herrmann has edited “Handbook of Operations Research for Homeland Security,” a book published on November 7 that addresses how operations research models can be used to prevent terrorist attacks, plan and prepare for emergencies, and respond to and recover from disasters.

Series editor Frederick S. Hillier, a professor at Stanford University, invited Herrmann to edit this book, which Herrmann began in June 2010. This is the second book in the International Series in Operations Research and Management Science that he has edited – the first was the “Handbook of Production Scheduling,” which was published two years ago.

bookThe book’s nine chapters cover topics ranging from an overview and case study of pandemic influenza, to disaster response planning in the private sector.  “The authors of the chapters are leading researchers in this area,” Herrmann said.  “I am grateful to them for contributing their work to this volume.”

Herrmann is in the early stages of writing a book on engineering decision-making and risk management, based on course notes for a graduate course he teaches.  Through this planned book, Herrmann hopes to provide information and techniques to help engineers make better decisions and help organizations design more effective decision-making systems.
