Doctorate student Dana Ehyaei landed the winning goal for the mechanical engineering intramural team Los Tiburones (The Sharks) in the spring 2012 championship game, defeating the Bio Sciences team and bringing the latest Graduate/Faculty/Staff intramural leagues to a close.

Mechanical engineering graduate students, interns, and visiting researchers come together to compete in the campus-wide Graduate/Faculty/Staff intramural leagues each term.  The game style varies by season, from 6 players on each team in the fall, 5 in the winter, and 9 in the spring.  The games are played indoors in the winter at Cole Field House.  The mechanical engineering team competes against teams from all departments, from rivals in aerospace engineering, to teams from the Robert H. Smith School of Business, public policy, and government and politics.   “I think we have been successful because of our diversity and toughness,” midfielder and team captain Michael Siemann said.  “We have players from five of the seven continents of the world; everyone brings in a unique style and set of skills which really blend well.  We are also mechanical engineers, arguably one of the most difficult fields of work, and excelling in that has strengthened our character.”

To find out more about intramural sports, visit the Campus Recreation Services website.  Contact Michel Siemann if you would like to join the summer pickup or seasonal games.
