Prof. Kenneth Kiger has been promoted to full professor and appointed as director of undergraduate studies.  Kiger has been a professor at the university since 1995, teaching courses in mechanics one week after finishing his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego.  His research has also made a significant impact on experimental techniques and experimental fluid mechanics.  “It feels good to be recognized by my colleagues and the administration as having made a lasting contribution worthy of the promotion,” Dr. Kiger said.

These contributions are a great fit for his new appointment as director of undergraduate studies, since Dr. Kiger has served on the board of the undergraduate committee since 1999, participated in the Keystone program since its inception in 2006, and contributed to the development of the department’s strategic plan in undergraduate education.  “Many of my colleagues and the prior directors have done an excellent job in building up our program,” Dr. Kiger said.  “I plan to work hard to make sure those efforts are not undone” as undergraduate enrollment has increased more than 50 percent in the last four years while the department has faced budget cuts.  Another goal of Dr. Kiger’s is to create a distinctive undergraduate experience similar to his own that shaped his views on engineering for all students in the program, not just those who pass through his classes.
Dr. Kiger will begin his appointment July 1.
