Twenty-five freshmen in College Park Scholars (Scholars) helped UM exhibitors during the USA Science & Engineering Festival (Festival) on the National Mall, Oct. 23 & 24, 2010. University of Maryland brought more than 20 exhibits to the National Mall, and students volunteered in shifts on Saturday and Sunday, to help exhibitors reach the public.

Nick Hammer, the volunteer coordinator, said the Scholars students showed a great ability to understand the underlying scientific principles of the demonstrations. Students were enthusiastic and communicated effectively with thousands of visitors to the UM exhibits.

Service is part of the mission of Scholars, and 10 additional freshmen in the Scholars program Science, Technology and Society have assisted at Maryland Robotics Day and at Bioscience Research & Technology Review Day. Students state that when they perform service, they feel like they're an important part of the university community. The students who volunteered at the Festival were especially eager to demonstrate hands-on science activities and to engage the public.
