The Department of Mechanical Engineering was recently ranked by U.S. News & World Report 2011 edition of "America?s Best Colleges" as the 19th best program, breaking the top-20 for the first time. Undergraduate rankings are, "Based on up to 16 key measures of quality. U.S. News uses these measures to capture the various dimensions of academic quality at each college?and the scores for each measure are weighted to arrive at a final overall score."
The ME graduate program is ranked 21st for the second year in a row. Graduate rankings are determined through a peer-review survey distributed to senior faculty and deans who are familiar with the colleges involved.
ME Acting Chair Bala Balachandran states, "The #19 ranking is the latest evidence of success in our vigorous pursuit of academic excellence in engineering education." Balachandran continued, "The faculty and staff surmounted enormous obstacles this past year and continued to provide our growing number of undergraduates with an excellent education, national visibility, and a springboard to professional success."
The A. James Clark School of Engineering moved up the rankings to become the nation?s 9th best public engineering school (19th overall). Clark School Dean Darryll Pines asserted, "?it is gratifying to see the Clark School achieve this very special milestone." This accomplishment served to ensure that the Clark School?s reputation continues to grow in the larger engineering community including academia, industry and government.
