Distinguished Mechanical Engineering Faculty Member Charles A. Shreeve, Jr. passed away on Wednesday, May 4. Shreeve was also a Professor Emeritus and had many friends in the A.J. Clark School of Engineering.
Charles Alfred Shreeve, Jr. was born on March 29, 1915 in Baltimore Maryland. In 1937 he met Elsie Starks in Far Rockaway, New York, where they both belonged to a singing group, and later married in 1940. Shreeve obtained his Bachelor?s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins in 1935, and his Master?s from the University of Maryland in 1943 with a focus on combustion and fluid dynamics. Following an unexpected vacancy, Shreeve stepped in as acting Chair of the ME department in 1958, eventually serving in full capacity in the position until 1970. He served as a Professor until until retiring in 1991. Throughout his university career, he performed practical consulting work for a number of national and regional companies and government agencies.
Memorial services for Charles Shreeve will be held on Saturday, May 21st at 2:00pm at the Kindley Assisted Living Building, 333 Russell Ave in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Charles A. and Elise S. Shreeve Scholarship that benefits ME students. Checks should be made out to the University of Maryland Foundation with a reference to the Charles A. and Elise S. Shreeve Scholarship on the memo line, and sent to the attention of Radka Z. Questions regarding scholarship can be sent to Radka Nebesky at radka@umd.edu. ?Al set up this undergraduate scholarship at Maryland, giving what he could over time, originally without my knowledge of his kindness,? noted Elsie Shreeve, who passed away in 2004. ?In honor of his generosity and his love for education, I?ve contributed an additional $60,000 through charitable gift annuities to bring the Charles A. and Elsie Shreeve Scholarship fund to $100,000.? Through this planned gift, one daughter of each of Al?s brothers will receive monthly funds, and upon their death, the funds will revert to the university. It?s a win-win for everyone,? she added.
