In an attempt to provide practical exposure to the undergraduate students Professor Ashwani Gupta took his students from his ENME 489W class (Thermal Destruction Technology and Air Pollution) to see the Waste Management Baltimore Resco Waste to Energy Power Plant located in Baltimore, MD on April 3, 2003. The tour was sponsored by the Mechanical Engineering Department. This plant processes 2250 tons/day of waste into thermal energy and electrical energy. The thermal energy provides heat to downtown Baltimore while the electrical energy is sold to the local grid. The waste gases produced from the plant are scrubbed with no visible emissions. The plant tour was very exciting for the students to learn the real world engineering problems as well as prepare them for practical industrial issues and challenges.
