Distinguished University Professor of Mechanical Engineering Karepalli R Sreenivasan has been appointed as the new director of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy. The ICTP was founded in 1964 by Abdus Salam with the aim of fostering the growth of science and research in developing countries.

Sreenivasan is an experimentalist and is also a professor of physics at the University of Maryland, where he also directs the Institute for Physical Science and Technology. He received his doctorate in aerospace engineering at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and spent two years as a post-doctoral research fellow in Australia before moving to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He moved from Yale University to Maryland last January.

Sreenivasan, who is 55, has published over 150 papers in the fields of complex fluids, turbulence, combustion, cryogenic helium and nonlinear dynamics. He will begin his tenure at the ICTP in March 2003.
