On April 26, 2002, 18 students and their instructor from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces visited several laboratories within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. These students, working toward an MS in National Resource Management, have been visiting research and manufacturing facilities around the world ? this University of Maryland visit was their only research university one. They chose the Maryland labs not only for our proximity to the ICAF, but also because of the high quality in manufacturing research being conducted here.

A component of the National Defense University, the ICAF's mission is to prepare selected military officers and civilians for senior leadership and staff positions by conducting postgraduate, executive-level courses of study and associated research dealing with national security strategy and the resource component of national power, with special emphasis on acquisition and joint logistics, and their integration into national security strategy for peace and war. It is located at Ft. McNair in Washington, DC.

The students were hosted by Assoc. Prof. Jeffrey Herrmann and were welcomed by Department Chairman Avram Bar-Cohen. Among the labs visited at the University were the Computer Integrated Manufacturing Lab and the Functionally Graded Materials Development Lab. These students also heard presentations by ME faculty in the following areas:

Funding ? Assoc. Prof. Peter Sandborn and Mr. Jeff Coriale (ISR)

MEMS ? Asst. Prof. Elisabeth Smela

Functionally Graded Materials ? Asst. Prof. Hugh Bruck

Multi-Piece Multi-Stage Molds ? Asst. Prof. S.K. Gupta
