Department of Mechanical Engineering student Abigail “Abby” Meyer (’21) has been awarded the A. James Clark School of Engineering’s Women in Engineering Service Award. The award recognizes a student who has contributed most to furthering the advancement of women in engineering.

As the Terps Racing Baja Team Captain, Meyer has been on a mission to increase the number of women joining Terps Racing, which designs, builds, and competes in intercollegiate competitions with racecars.

In coordination with UMD’s Women in Engineering office, Meyer has worked to develop tailored hands-on engagement opportunities for female students to learn about the club.

She is also an active volunteer with the Women in Engineering program focusing on STEM nights for middle school-aged girls. She was a mentor in the SEEDS Mentoring Program and graduated from the Flexus program.

Meyer sites Terps Racing as one of the most beneficial experiences she’s had at Maryland and credits the group with helping her develop not only leadership skills, but hands-on skills such as machining and fabrication that make her a not only a valuable asset to future employers, but they’re skills few women entering into the workforce possess.

Meyer will be interning at Oshkosh Defense this summer in Wisconsin.
