Earlier this month, Mechanical Engineering Assistant Professors Mark Fuge, Jin-Oh Hahn, and Monifa Vaughn-Cooke were guests in a special series of the podcast “The Business of Government Hour.” In their episodes, the professors discussed their current research and the future of their fields. The podcast is hosted by Michael J. Keegan and is produced by the IBM Center for the Business of Government. According to its website, the goal of the podcast is to “connect research to practice.”

On the October 30 episode, Fuge discussed several aspects of his research in data-driven design and current work being done at the IDEAL Lab. He also went into current trends in Big Data practices and how they can be applied in both technical fields and in the government.

Hahn and Vaughn-Cooke each spoke for half of the podcast released October 30. Hahn discussed his research in the Laboratory for Control and Information Systems, including recent work in autonomous critical care systems. Vaughn-Cooke talked about current research in the Hybrid-System Integration and Simulation Lab, including human factors and design of user-centric products and systems. She also discussed the role of Virtual Reality (VR) and its potential applications in addiction treatment.

The podcasts are posted online on the IBM Business of Government website and range from half an hour to fifty minutes long. These podcasts follow other recent partnerships with IBM and the department, including last year’s Whiting-Turner lecture and QUEST IBM Design Challenge.
