Department of Mechanical Engineering Professor Peter Sandborn has been awarded the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) 2017 Kos Ishii-Toshiba Award. This award recognizes “sustained meritorious contributions to the research to support design, manufacturing and the life cycle management decisions in product development.”

Sandborn currently serves as the Director of the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (MTech), and teaches within the A. James Clark School of Engineering Keystone Program. He is a fellow of ASME and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Earlier this year, he published the second edition of his Cost Analysis of Electronic Systems.

The Kos Ishii-Toshiba Award is given by the ASME Design for Manufacturing and the Life Cycle (DFMLC) committee annually and was established in 2011. The award honors Kosuke "Kos" Ishii, a professor of mechanical engineering at Stanford University and director of the Manufacturing Modeling Laboratory there. Ishii was known for his dedication to teaching manufacturing design and his strong partnership with Toshiba, for which he and his father had worked. He passed away unexpectedly in 2009 at the age of 51.

Sandborn will be presented with the award at ASME’s 2017 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences (IDETC) in Cleveland, Ohio this August.
