"Static and Dynamic Obstacle Avoidance for Fixed-Winged UAV"

Abstract
While obstacle avoidance is a widely researched topic in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), system testing and development is widely centered to theoretical or ideal scenarios. Our research demonstrates static and dynamic obstacle avoidance in an outdoor, relatively uncontrolled test environment using off the shelf consumer level hardware. We used 3D path-planning algorithms, which we modified from a theoretical grid environment to outdoor geographic coordinates to successfully navigate a fixed-winged UAV through a hazardous environment.
 
About the Robotics Student Seminars
The Robotics Student Seminars at the University of Maryland College Park are a student-run series of talks given by current graduate and undergraduate students.
 
The purpose of these talks is to:
  • Encourage interaction between Robotics students from different subfields;
  • Provide an opportunity for Robotics students to be aware of and possibly get involved in the research their peers are conducting;
  • Provide an opportunity for Robotics students to receive feedback on their current research;
  • Provide speaking opportunities for Robotics students.
